For decades, Southern California has excelled at reinventing entertainment, and now Orange County is taking that approach to America's favorite pastime.
Irvine officials have approved a partnership that will bring a new pro baseball franchise to Great Park Baseball Stadium beginning in 2027. But if team organizers deliver on their vision, the biggest story won't simply be another club joining the regional sports landscape—it will be an entirely different way of experiencing a night at the ballpark.
Rather than relying solely on what happens between the foul lines, the franchise plans to build its identity around the complete fan experience, drawing inspiration from the electric atmospheres found in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball and South Korea's Korea Baseball Organization. Think coordinated crowd participation, interactive entertainment, elevated hospitality and a food program designed to reflect The O.C.'s diverse culinary scene.
'I've seen how the game has the power to bridge cultures and bring diverse communities together. We are thrilled to bring this innovative concept to California.'
-- World Series-winning coach Don Wakamatsu
The team will compete in the Pioneer Baseball League, one of Major League Baseball's official Partner Leagues, giving Orange County fans another opportunity to watch professional baseball without the premium prices often associated with the major leagues.
Innovation Baseball Partners, the organization behind the project, has made affordable, family-friendly entertainment a cornerstone of its business model. The company also helped launch the Long Beach Coast, another Southern California franchise that debuted last year and quickly generated buzz by combining community-focused programming with an energetic game-day atmosphere.
For Irvine, the announcement adds another high-profile attraction to the ever-expanding Great Park district, which has steadily evolved into one of SoCal's largest destinations for youth sports and recreation. The arrival of professional baseball further strengthens Irvine's drive to become a year-round sports hub for Orange County.
Former Major League player and World Series-winning coach Don Wakamatsu will oversee baseball operations, bringing decades of professional experience to the new franchise.
"Throughout my life in baseball, I've seen how the game has the power to bridge cultures, ignite passion, and bring diverse communities together for shared joy," says Wakamatsu. "We are thrilled to bring this innovative concept to California. Our goal is to capture the incredible energy of global fan culture and pair it with a high-caliber product on the field."
Many details—including the team's name, logo, and roster—remain under wraps. Those announcements are expected in the coming months as preparations ramp up for the inaugural 2027 season.
Whether longtime baseball fans embrace the concept or newcomers discover the game for the first time, Irvine's newest franchise is positioning itself as something distinctly Southern California: a place where sports, culture, food and entertainment share the spotlight.
If successful, the region won't simply gain another baseball team—it could become home to one of the country's most distinctive ballpark experiences.
